Guild Hall's exhibition will focus on major early works from the late 1950's to the early 1960's when Rivers was at the forefront of the New York art world. At this time, Rivers was one of a group of artists associated with the Pop Art movement, characterized by artwork that reproduced everyday objects of American pop culture. Rivers, however, was also known as one of the first artists to uniquely merge objective, narrative art with the non-objective and abstract.
